Standing On God’s Promises

What do the promises of God mean to you? Out of my conversationalist nature, I asked this to a friend of mine I was on phone with midway of writing this article. (Thanks Domi, I needed an intro..*wink*) It caught him off-guard but he gently muttered, “God is not emotional. He doesn’t say stuff or do stuff based on how He feels. Therefore, I can trust what He says coz I know He means it.”

Powerful!

What do the promises of God mean to you?

Karibu hapa:)

I’ve been in this season in my life where my faith muscles are being worked like never before. The sole reason for my faith is being strongly brought out now more than ever. So much waiting, so much of believing in the unseen and literally just taking a day at a time. If I may just throw it in here somewhere….it’s the reason why sometimes I go mum; because so much is being fed into my spirit and often times I find myself in a place where I just need to sit silent, chew on it and digest it while I listen some more, then do the pouring out later. I hope I’m not making it sound like it’s a bad place because it really isn’t. The moulding wheel is a good place for they that know their Potter. Can’t wait to come out better!

Like clay in the hands of a potter, so am I to You my Lord. Mend me. Grow me.

In an unstable world where vows are often broken, it’s reassuring that believers serve a God who keeps His Word. In my recent study of Psalm 119, I got into meditating on what the promises of God mean to me and for me. Especially after I read this:

“This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life”
~Psalms 119:50

Promises…promises…This takes me back to when my parents would promise to get us something once we did well at school. You probably relate. It would bring in a certain drive and motivation that keeps you going even when algebra kicks in and makes life miserable. And, the fact that we could trust that they’d do as they vowed to, made it even better!

David, a beloved child of the King, ate quite a big piece off the cake of affliction. But He knew who he served and the promises of His Lord gave Him LIFE! Now that there touched me! That I can continue to live steadily on promises, knowing firmly that they will come to pass in my life at their opportune time.

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
~Numbers 23:19

Growing up a staunch Methodist has been absolutely amazing for me. Shout out Thika Methodist Church! <3 One of the most splendid things is that fact that years and years on, we still sing hymns as a part of our service. My Mum too, formerly an SDA, is a hymn bank in herself and from time to time she would want to sing to me some hymns she learnt. I also recall the Golden Bells! Back in my primary school it was a little book you just had to own lest you wouldn’t enjoy assemblies, being punished for not having it together with your Bible. Oh memories! These hymns bear so much depth and weight in message – so powerfully written under the breath of the Spirit.

As I was thinking about this, the words of this hymn fell on my heart:

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

The Bible literally has thousands of promises waiting to be claimed in faith. And when we understand what it means to lean on promises that can NEVER fail, then we are able to tap into their power even more. As Hebrews 10:23 tells us, He who promised is faithful. And while we wait on the fulfillment, we grow.

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

I now, more than ever, understand this. It’s encouraged me a lot. It has lifted my spirits and given me hope. Life with the Almighty is always worthy, no matter what!

“Uphold me according to your promise that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope.”
~Psalm 119:116

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
List’ning every moment to the Spirit’s call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

God is a promise keeper! Let that keep you encouraged:)

Love love,
Lau.
